Parent of the Month - June 2007
Sara Goodwin
1. Can you give us your philosophy on being a
good tennis parent?
My job is to be Andrew’s number one supporter! I always encourage
him and share in his excitement. I also try to remind him that he’s
on a long journey that isn’t decided by just one win or loss.
I love finding out about his favorite points—like the ’tweener
lob winner from the doubles final at the state qualifier. I depend on
him and the coaches to make sure his game is moving in the right direction.
2. Andrew has a great personality, is he fun to be around at
home?
Of course. He’s usually so tired when he gets home but he does
like to joke around, especially on his younger sister. He’s locked
her out of the house on many occasions, although the best was when he
changed the ringer on my phone so it was completely silent when Grace
called.
3. Andrew is very focused, how much do you help with his schedule,
both in tennis and homeschool?
Andrew usually takes care of his own tennis and home school schedule.
He’s very focused, responsible, and organized, so I don’t
have push him. With three children the kids know they have to take ownership
for things they really want. I just encourage Andrew to go for what
he wants and try to help him get there.
4. What does Andrew’s tennis mean to you and your family?
It means a different thing to each of us. His sisters are very proud
and encourage Andrew in their own way. I’m proud of his accomplishments,
but even more proud that he’s found something in life he truly
enjoys.
