The Million Dollar Question: How do I move up?The most often asked question here at Windward is “How can I move up in Academy?” The first step is to dominate the group you are in. This is done by constantly succeeding in drills and the various play formats; not necessarily just winning but working well with the focus of the drill or play. Obviously, finishing on the top court helps, but this alone will not result in moving up. Putting forth a great effort every day and listening well are extremely important. We don’t want you to be scared about asking to move up, but first ask yourself if you are dominating your group. Don’t worry about what other kids are doing, a great question to ask is what else can I do. We really don’t want the parents asking for their children. We often hear, “Tommy is playing well in tournaments and he is always on the top court. I don’t think he is being challenged enough.” If that were the case he would already have been moved up. The academy player needs to be asking us the question. We want to teach players the value of being responsible for their tennis. So parents talk to your children and have them come ask us for advice. Tournaments are a key component; after all they are the best yardsticks for evaluating levels of play. . If you want to be in our top groups, seeing your name in the state top 100 will help. Tournaments also show us your commitment to tennis. We pride ourselves on evaluating your play and it is our goal to move players up at the appropriate time. Cannon and Will |
